Manning Publications Co. is a leading global publisher of technology books. We are seeking a part-time Development Editor to coach book authors on how to create high-quality, innovative content. You will apply market research and editorial expertise to publish commercially successful books. Strong communication and critical thinking skills are essential, along with a great eye for detail.
Role Overview
This position is ideal for someone looking for flexible and remote freelance work (15-30 hours per week). You must have crossover with US business hours (Eastern time). A remote office with a reliable computer, Internet, and email access is required.
PRIMARY DUTIES
· Help authors to meet customer needs by guiding them through the writing process.
· Shape chapters to deliver information effectively and clearly.
· Research key competitor titles and monitor tech trends.
· Manage the book development process to meet publication deadlines.
· Collaborate with authors and technical reviewers to build long-lasting relationships.
· Communicate complex technical information in an accessible way.
· Use feedback from tech community members to inform your editing.
· Follow Manning’s style guidelines.
· Perform occasional tasks related to the marketing of books.
REQUIRED SKILLS
· 1+ years of previous editing experience
· Excellent written English and proofreading skills
· Commercial awareness and research skills
· Strong project and time management abilities
· An interest in technology
· Confidence using Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
· Strong interpersonal skills and a professional approach
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience in a book publishing or content creation environment is desirable. You should have a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, technical writing, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees, certifications, or experience in STEM fields, as well as experience with programming languages and AI, are a plus.
