JOB SUMMARY The Database Administrator II is responsible for Microsoft SQL Server database administration and business intelligence support, including data modeling, reporting, ad hoc data requests, and project team support.  The role involves intermediate to advanced work in providing effective and efficient storage, retrieval, customization, and archiving of data by managing diverse data sets to ensure an integrated database system for all users.  Key responsibilities include assisting in the development and implementation of database policies and procedures, ensuring data integrity throughout the maintenance and modification of existing applications, and contributing to organizational continuity through institutional knowledge preservation for critical database systems.  The incumbent works under the direction of senior staff with increasing independence as proficiency is developed.  This role is intended to develop expertise in UMPH’s database environment through structured knowledge transfer and mentorship from senior IT staff.  This is a fully remote position requiring self-direction, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work effectively in a distributed team environment.   ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT & AREAS OF IMPACT Reporting Relationship & Peers Reports to the Executive Director, Digital Commerce Systems, as do: - Technical Services Director - Business Systems Manager - IT Operations Manager - Database Administrator IV - Business Systems Analyst III   Reporting Directly to This Job - N/A   Areas of Impact (as applicable) DEPARTMENT OPERATING BUDGET - $1.6M     RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE Essential Job Functions PRIMARY - Assists in the design and maintenance of existing database structures, with primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server environments.  Assists senior IT staff in monitoring database performance and implementing efficiency improvements.  Ensures that appropriate database management and business intelligence software is available and effectively used.  Performs database performance monitoring and implements efficiency improvements.  Performs data migrations for implementation of new systems.  Supports the business with knowledge of how data interacts with the applications used by business units. - Assists in implementing and enhancing standards on database and business intelligence (BI) security.  Assists in designing procedures to save and recover databases from hardware and software failures.  Supports data warehouse operations and reporting infrastructure, including maintenance of reporting tools and data feeds that serve business units. - Participates in knowledge transfer and succession planning activities to build organizational depth in critical database administration competencies.  Documents existing database architectures, processes, and institutional knowledge.  Develops proficiency across UMPH’s interconnected database systems to ensure business continuity. SECONDARY - Supports cross-functional IT project teams by providing database expertise for system integrations, upgrades, and new implementations.  Assists applications programmers with database concepts, efficient access techniques, and problem resolution. - Researches emerging database tools, platforms, and best practices to inform technology decisions led by senior staff.  Assists in evaluating software packages and planning migrations to new data management system software levels when directed. - Stays current on developments in database management and BI through self-directed learning, professional development, and engagement with technical communities.  Performs related work as assigned. Contributing to long-range database planning within an environment of multiple interconnected systems where changes to one platform can have cascading effects across the technology stack - Being highly flexible and adaptive to support the business when subject matter experts are not available in the business units - Navigating a diverse technology environment that includes both legacy and modern platforms with varying levels of documentation, where the DBA must develop working knowledge across systems such as ERP, ecommerce, and content management - Absorbing institutional knowledge of complex, interdependent database systems in a multi-platform environment while working effectively as a self-directed remote team member   Authority & Accountability - Authority to operate within the guidelines of UMPH and IT policies and procedures - Authority to perform necessary steps to ensure the integrity of UMPH databases under the direction of senior database staff - Authority to coordinate with outside vendors for data integrations in support of senior staff and management   Regular Contacts & Stakeholders INTERNAL - Information Technology management and staff as well as management of other UMPH divisions EXTERNAL - IT vendors – to ensure that UMPH database and business intelligence needs and requirements are met - Peers in professional organizations (e.g., Microsoft Developer Network, SQL Server community groups, online technical forums) - Subscriptions to relevant technology publications, newsletters, and online learning resources   JOB REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, & Certifications REQUIRED - An Associate’s degree in computer science or related information technology field - Two (2) to four (4) years of experience working with Microsoft SQL Server - Additional experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis PREFERRED - Experience with Oracle databases is preferred but not required   Development Tools - Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services - Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services - Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services - Microsoft Visual Studio - Azure Data Studio   Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities REQUIRED - Good understanding of various database architectures, with depth in Microsoft SQL Server - Good understanding of data security management and issues - Working knowledge of various backup and recovery methodologies - Working knowledge of database resource management, performance management, storage structures, and performance tuning - Proficiency in usage of T-SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS - Proficiency in writing and maintaining Linux shell scripts and Windows command scripts - Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively in a fully remote environment with minimal supervision - Intellectual curiosity and a self-starter mentality with a desire to learn complex business systems and processes - Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across distributed teams and business units - Willingness to explore emerging technologies including AI-assisted tools and data integration methods PREFERRED - Familiarity with PL/SQL and Oracle database tools is preferred but not required - Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio and Azure Data Studio is preferred   Remote Work Requirements This is a fully remote position.  The following are required as conditions of employment: -
