Joining our team means becoming part of an organization where every role directly contributes to the well‑being of the communities we serve. Why This Role Is a Game‑Changer The Customer Field Operations Crew II position is far more than a job title; it’s an invitation to make a tangible difference in the lives of our customers. You’ll work hands‑on with state‑of‑the‑art equipment, solve real‑world problems on the front lines, and collaborate with seasoned professionals who value safety, precision, and teamwork. Whether you’re laying new pipeline sections, responding to emergency leaks, or performing routine maintenance, every task you complete helps ensure that families across Wilmington and the surrounding region enjoy reliable, uninterrupted service. Key Responsibilities – What Your Day Might Look Like - Operate heavy‑duty machinery—including backhoes, trenchers, cranes, and jackhammers—to excavate, install, and maintain underground pipelines. - Perform precision pipe work: cut, thread, re‑wrap, and “squeeze‑off” both steel and plastic pipe sections, ensuring leak‑free connections. - Install and secure leak clamps, fuse plastic pipe, and set up taps in preparation for service activation. - Execute detailed site excavation plans, layout lines, and conduct traffic control to protect both crew members and the public. - Locate existing pipelines using detection equipment, assist with purges, retire services, and relocate service lines as required. - Change stop‑cocks, perform routine equipment maintenance, and verify that all tools are in optimal condition before each shift. - Respond rapidly to emergency gas‑leak situations, utilizing SCBA equipment and adhering to strict safety protocols. - Document work performed, complete service tickets, and communicate findings to dispatch and control centers. - Assist teammates with a variety of related activities, including equipment transport, tool organization, and site clean‑up. - Maintain a proactive safety mindset, conducting pre‑task hazard assessments and adhering to arenaflex’s zero‑incident goals. Essential Qualifications – The Foundations You Need - Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record. - High School diploma or GED equivalent. - Minimum three (3) years of hands‑on experience operating backhoes, excavators, or comparable heavy equipment in an excavation or utility‑construction environment. - Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 100 lbs, frequent bending, stooping, climbing, and working on uneven terrain. - Weight restriction compliance: ability to safely operate equipment with a maximum load capacity of 275 lbs. - Strong mechanical aptitude and proven proficiency with hand tools (grinders, brushes, wrenches, “squeeze” tools, heating irons, etc.). - Excellent hand‑eye coordination, keen eyesight, good hearing, and a reliable sense of smell for detecting gas odors. - Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, rotating shifts, and on‑call emergency response. - Ability to obtain and maintain any required state or local certifications for pipeline installation and gas‑leak response. Preferred Qualifications – What Makes a Candidate Stand Out - Formal training or certification in underground utility construction, gas‑line installation, or an accredited apprenticeship program. - Prior experience with traffic control procedures and coordination with municipal authorities. - Proficiency in using pipeline detection devices, GPS mapping tools, and electronic documentation software. - Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of effective communication in high‑stress environments. - Safety certifications such as OSHA 10‑hour, Confined Space Entry, or Hazardous Materials handling. - Demonstrated ability to mentor junior crew members and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement. Core Skills & Competencies – The Toolkit for Success - Technical Mastery: Ability to read and interpret pipeline schematics, site plans, and work orders. - Problem‑Solving: Quick identification of issues, such as pipe obstructions or leak sources, and implementation of corrective actions. - Physical Stamina: Sustained endurance for long shifts in adverse weather, including heat, cold, rain, or high humidity. - Safety Focus: Commitment to personal and crew safety, including proper use of PPE, SCBA, and adherence to lock‑out/tag‑out procedures. - Team Collaboration: Ability to work cohesively with dispatch, control centers, engineers, and field supervisors. - Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities, emergency call‑outs, and evolving regulatory requirements. - Attention to Detail: Precise execution of pipe cuts, threads, and re‑wraps to prevent future failures. Work Environment & Conditions Field work is inherently dynamic. You’ll spend the majority of your time outdoors, navigating uneven terrain, dense vegetation, and variable weather conditions. While many tasks are performed during daylight hours, emergency response may require night‑time or weekend deployments. All crew members are expected to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and to be comfortable operating in confined spaces when needed.
