Major Responsibilities Performs complex pharmaceutical processes, utilizing advanced skills and knowledge in specialized areas such as hazardous sterile compounding, operating room, automation, remote dispensing, medication history, purchasing, or billing/insurance coordination. Serves as an expert in equipment and technology, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring accurate and timely documentation and record-keeping. Identifies quality improvement opportunities, providing input and supporting the implementation of operational changes, advancements, and standardization initiatives. Collaborates with department leaders to develop and coordinate team member education, training, orientation, and competency, and trains other team members in specialized areas. Complies with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, staying current with changes in the specialized field and adopting best practices. Serves as a resource and liaison for other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses, and ancillary departments, problem-solving complex issues and ensuring effective communication and escalation of concerns. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Requirements Must be registered or licensed as required by the state of practice. Pharmacy Technician certification issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or ExCPT. Some roles may require a second certification, such as Immunization and non-vaccine injectable, issued by the state of practice or ACPE. Education and Experience Requirements High School Graduate or equivalent. Typically requires 5 years of experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy technician role, depending on the specialty area. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Good mathematics skills, with attention to detail and ability to perform calculations accurately. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide exceptional customer service and resolve complex problems. Basic computer skills, with proficiency in operating equipment and technology necessary to perform the job. Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a strong focus on collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions The Pharmacy Technician Specialist - Controlled Substances role requires the ability to operate equipment, lift, carry, and push/pull various items, and perform fine motor motions. You must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, kneel, climb, twist, crawl, and reach above shoulders, with functional speech, vision, touch, and hearing. You may be exposed to chemical hazards, chemical and hazardous waste, blood and body fluids, and communicable diseases, and must wear protective clothing and equipment as necessary.
